The State Gallery
With its rich collection of masterpieces from the 14th century to the present day, the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart is one of the most popular museums in Germany. The impressive museum complex and our collection reflect the combination of tradition and modernity.

On approximately 12,000 m2, spread over the old building from 1843, the famous postmodern Stirling Building and the Steib Halls built in 2002, we present our top-class collection. Among the important collections are numerous works from the Collection of Prints and Drawings, Old Swabian panel painting and outstanding works of 19th century Swabian classicism. Undoubtedly, Classical Modernism with works from the years 1900 to 1980 forms the focal point of our museum’s collection. Special highlights include Oskar Schlemmer’s “Figurines for the Triadic Ballet” from the early 1920s, the famous “Back Nudes” (1909-1930) by Henri Matisse, numerous works by Picasso, including the sculpture group “The Bathers” (1956) and the Joseph Beuys Room, which the artist still personally furnished.

Preserving the past - collecting for the future
The Staatsgalerie is a world-class museum. It houses around 5,500 paintings and sculptures as well as numerous works on paper, supplemented by a further 100,000 - 250,000 archival documents from artists’ estates. This makes it the largest art museum in the state of Baden-Württemberg. From the Old Masters to contemporary art, the focal points of the collection’s concept paint a unique picture. In this special position, the Staatsgalerie is asserting itself nationwide, strengthened by a targeted acquisition policy that we pursue with the aim of preserving our cultural heritage in a multi-faceted and concise manner.
